If you live in New Zealand and are looking for a canine companion (Gaby, this is for you), head over to doggelganger to find your match. You can upload a photo or have a snapshot taken by a webcam on the site. Doggelganger will match your facial features to their database of puppies/dogs for adoption. I love it when a good thing is also fun. I know, I don’t live in NZ and we are not ready for a dog yet, but it was fun.

My canine match is a 6-month puppy named Max.

No knitting news of note because I’ve been derailed by the new round of construction around the house which this time involves considerable legwork to choose and buy materials. I’ve been swatching a little in the evenings and coordinating a bit of testing with my lovely helpers. The only intensive thing going on at the moment is my new found interest in the Japanese language. This time my goals are less lofty — I am never going to learn to actually speak Japanese unless I find a way to be exposed to it daily — and a lot more practical. I am looking at all my Japanese knitting books to get a hang of how Japanese patterns work and slowly compiling my own Japanese-English knitting dictionary with the help of books, various online glossaries and tutorials, and the wonderful Japanese Knitting and Crochet group on Ravelry. Why? Hm, I don’t have a good answer. Japanese is one of the constants in my life, like knitting. I may abandon it for a year or two, but it always comes back. As a way of practicing what I am learning, I am starting to translate my PIP into Japanese. OK, not really translate; “labeling” might be a more accurate term. I am also trying to condense the pattern and looking at how the Japanese do it. There’s a lot to be learned there. My next patterns are not, repeat not, going to be as long as the first one. And just so you don’t feel like you’ve wasted your time looking at cute puppies, I leave you with something useful.

PIP

PIP, as in Pattern In Progress. Have I told you how much I appreciate your help? I do. Since I posted about needing testers a few days ago, I got a few volunteers that between correcting mistakes and suggesting improvements are helping me shape up the pattern for Fragile Heart and teaching me things that will help me in future projects as well. But the most important thing I learned so far is:

Not without testing

I need reminders, lest I get ahead of myself.

You would not believe the stupid things I’ve done, and I thought I was in better shape this time. Told myself this was going to be easier; hey, it’s my second pattern, right? Eh. Well, it is easier, just not simple. The chart seems error-free, though I need to tweak the color values to make it print clearly in B&W as well as in color. Not so the written instructions. Charting the stitch motif was, er, challenging. No wonder the original stitch in Barbara Walker’s

book came only in written form. I had to chart that stitch before I could even try to modify it to get what I wanted. It took a lot of trial and error and in the end I used the chart so many times that I worked out all mistakes (fingers entwined). Then I worked backward from the chart to compile the written instructions, and I knit from those only once since the first test came out correct. I suppose what happened is what always happens when you try to edit your own writing: your brain knows what’s supposed to be there and compensates. There were not one, but two errors, and that was just one section of the pattern. A typo here, an omission there, the wrong explanation for ssk in the legend… This stitch is not for the faint of heart. It demands attention, even without errors, and I am amazed that none of my valiant testers has sent pointy objects my way, yet. One thing I particularly struggle with is the flow of information. Do I keep all the techniques together, all the charts together, all the written instructions together, or do I insert relevant bits and pieces where they are most useful? After reading many threads on Ravelry from the point of view of both designers and knitters, and after trying many variations on the theme in these first two patterns, I believe that there is no perfect system, one that will work well for everybody, unless I write a pattern for knitters who favor charts and one for those who prefer written instructions. Oh wait, and then one for those who print their pattern and one for those who transfer the PDF to their Kindle or iPad. What to do? 1) Condense and trim as much as possible. Make the complex easy to understand without writing a dissertation; reduce redundancy while keeping information available when needed; encode as much as possible on one page while following basic typography principles for readability… 2) Find a balance between the convenience of the chart knitter and that of the text reader. 3) Keep information that needs to be printed together, to reduce the number of pages a knitter needs to print. This works also for the knitter that reads on a digital reader, reducing the need to flip pages. Better go do what I just wrote down. Not that I presume to know how to write a pattern after a whopping

Fragile Heart – testers needed

Fragile Heart lace scarf

Tanti cuoricini

The heart scarf is done and I love the semi-solid red of Anzula’s Wash my Lace. Much brighter than anything I’ve had in a long time; sometimes you just have to dare beyond gray, my default color these past few years.

I am writing up the pattern and will need testers soon. If any of you are interested, please leave me a note in the comments or email me at dada @ fluffbuff .com. The scarf itself is a decent time commitment (well for me it was, because I knit slowly), but even testing the stitch chart would be very helpful. The stitch is complex and requires some maneuvering (p2tog tbl, lace on both sides, dropped stitches picked up in subsequent rows, short rows).

P.S. I’ll revert to a weekly posting schedule soon. I don’t know what’s come over me this past week… I know posting too frequently becomes a bore.

Riva goes live

Riva pattern cover page

Riva is up on Ravelry and I also set up a pattern support page with: notes, photos, links to tutorials for techniques employed in the pattern, a link to download an excerpt of the PDF (cover + overview), and a button link to buy the pattern.

At some point I will design and build a proper website at SlowKnits.com, but until then the pattern support page will provide background information and links to resources. It may not be pretty, but the important stuff is there.

This was a learning experience that took longer than I had anticipated because everything I did was new to me: document every little action, write down instructions so that they would make sense to other knitters, refine them so they would be as concise and clear as possible, design the document, get my software to do what I wanted (I am still fighting with Illustrator and InDesign), learn the ropes of testing on a public forum, consider all the feedback and decide what to incorporate and what not, set up a store on Ravelry, and the list goes on.

Along the way I got an enormous amount of help, first from my friends who gave me thoughtful feedback on the logic and structure part of the document, then from my testers on Ravelry who spent about 20 hours each knitting the scarf and providing detailed feedback on the instructions. Not to mention some cheering up when I was getting discouraged. :)
Thank you girls! (Bethany, Carolyn, Priscilla, Betta, Loredana, Annie, Alyssa, Maria, Concetta) I am a little sleepy and hope I haven’t forgotten to include any of you when I sent out the final PDF in my pre-caffeine daze.

Off to make a big batch of ragù.

A most unsuitable orchid

Encyclia

Encyclia something

An orchid intermission was just the thing to do to tear myself away from the never-ending editing job of putting the not-quite-so-final touches to my pattern, so yesterday we took a day trip to Santa Barbara to visit an orchid nursery, a couple of yarn stores, and walk around the chalk paintings of the Madonnari festival at the Santa Barbara Mission.

On the trip there I managed to scribble a few notes on my print-outs, because I was to anal dedicated to leave home without them. All that dedication went away as soon as we reached the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate and Ben had to figure out how to leave the place without me mortgaging the house.

Lycaste aromatica

Lycaste aromatica

I had a vague idea of what I wanted to look at, which I did, but then fell in love with the most unsuitable orchid. Leave it to me to become infatuated with the only cinnamon-scented specimen among thousands of orchids. Of all the scents that give me instant headaches and leave me gasping for air, cinnamon is the worst offender and the beguiling orchid smelled like the most disgusting chewing gum. It took me a while to realize that the plant I was admiring was the source of that smell. By then it was too late; I already knew that I wanted it. Fortunately, the Lycaste Aromatica in question turned out not to be for sale, being that it was the mother plant and they had run out of smaller specimens. Unfortunately, the nice woman at the nursery offered to call another orchid nursery down the road to see if they had a young plant available.

You know how the story ends: we have the orchid in the back seat for the two-hour trip home while I try to survive without breathing. The Lycaste Aromatica is an outdoor orchid and is now sitting pretty between a languishing lavander and a struggling raspberry plant. We’ll see how she does in the next few days. I just couldn’t resist the intense yellow flowers.

Not a lot of knitting pictures lately, and not for lack of knitting activity. Or I should say knitting related activity, as a lot of what I’ve been doing in the past couple of weeks has been refining Riva based on feedback from my testers on Ravelry. This public testing is proving a more valuable and enjoyable experience than I had anticipated and I am getting excellent feedback on the charts and written instructions. Between my friends’ feedback on structure, logic and presentation and now the step-by-step testing and corrections, I am confident that the final pattern will be in good shape. The learning for such a simple pattern has been fenomenal. At the same time I am working on the next project, a lace stole or scarf. Yes, I am getting back to lace —

who would have thought? At the moment I am finalizing a lace motif that has kept me busy swatching variations, charting, recharting, and trying out different yarns. I was feeling rather pleased with my progress until I saw Bethany’s swatch. Is that gorgeous or what? Perhaps I should rethink my design aspirations. The current plan is a rather complex stitch to be used as an all-over pattern and a simple shawl construction: rectangular with understated edgings on the short sides. Too boring? Keeping me company this past week or so: a lot of rain and my baby hummingbirds who finally graduated from flight school and left me an empty nest, fond memories and a couple of video clips. Amazingly we were able to watch both birds make their first flight. It’s hard to put into words how exciting it was to watch first one and then the other fluff their wings and move a little away from the nest and then actually fly. They did it a couple of hours apart from each other but followed the same pattern, moving further away from the nest and higher on the tree until they were gone. Too bad those video clips didn’t turn out well, but we still got a couple with the birds in their nest and just outside, fluffing their wings. What can I say? I am a sucker for cute baby critters. Before I posted to the testers group I set up a designer’s page on Ravelry and I may have goofed there because now I think that it might have been better to do that after the pattern had been tested. A bit of eager beaver syndrome here; I wasn’t at my most alert early this morning between getting up too early and then getting distracted by the baby hummingbirds outside my window. The mama hummingbird we had last year came back to her nest — at least we think it’s the same bird — and had two babies who are now growing very fast and starting to run out of space in the nest. I keep looking out because I know they’ll be gone in a few days and I’ll miss them.
