Breathing again

After the knitting frenzy of a few weeks ago, you may think that I have new FOs and a flurry of projects on the needles. Not so. I spent some time swatching with new yarns and getting frustrated over a sudden inability to get anything done. At the same time, temperatures rose and knitting became less and less enjoyable. I had been looking forward to Labor Day weekend to start a new project and relax when suddenly our air conditioning broke — of course it happened on the hottest weekend of the year — and I spent the three most miserable days I can remember in a long time. Outside temperatures of 105F (41C); indoors almost as bad. They don't make houses with bricks in Southern California so when your environmental control system is out, life sucks. AC broke Saturday morning and we couldn't get anyone to come take a look until Monday afternoon. Less than four hours after getting it repaired, around dinner time, big power outage. Everything turned back on around 2 AM, right after I had finally fallen asleep. In short: the weekend from hell.

Things are finally looking up today. We and the cats are back to breathing normally. I felt bad for the boys, as cats don't really cool off like people and they have all that thick fur, too. I was actually afraid they might get a heat stroke or something, but other than a total lack of energy, they seem fine.

Since moving to Europe doesn't seem likely to happen in the short run, I am now pestering Ben about moving to Boston or something like that. At least we'd get cooler weather and we'd be closer to Europe. I just can't take LA weather anymore.

Oh dear, Francesca! Our weather has been miserable. I live 15 miles west of Boston. This has been the summer from H*LL with heat and humidity. I know nothing about the weather in LA so maybe Boston weather would be an improvement for you. At least it cools down quickly here and it snows! Good wool weather! You might really love the Boston area!

You should absolutely relocate to Boston. :-) It's still hot and humid in the summers, but you can wear all your heavy woolens in winter, and there are many more fiber festivals to attend because the states run so small in this part of the country. ;-)

Well, on the bright side, you have one of the cutest cats ever. :-)

I had a weekend from hell too ... not that my AC broke down ... but we discovered there were 2 black widow spiders in our patio plants!!!! They should have arrived at their spider heaven now ... but still the idea of more is a bit unsettling!

Oh you poor dear! My A/C went out in August during our 100+ heat wave and I thought I would die. And of course it was on a weekend!

I love and miss L.A. sorely but Boston is sounding pretty good to me too!

When we lived in Chicago we didn't have AC. We'd been living in the mountains of Montana so had no experience with heat and humidity. It was dreadful! When we moved to Texas I got the biggest, best air handling system money could buy.

I'm glad the boys pulled through okay. Sort of hard to give a furball a sponge bath, but could you mist them when it gets too hot, or would they resent you forever for the dampness? [My farm cats all swam in the creek and emerged looking more like chihuahuas.]

We have fog up here... You don't have to go as far as Boston (which does get hot and muggy during the summer).

Oh, forgot...the best reason to move to the Northeast is NO EARTHQUAKES or none that you notice anyway!!!

Oh yeah, no. This past weekend was absolute hell. Literally. We don't have A/C at all, so we were beyond miserable. I'm SO glad it's cooling down again!

Francesca, hang in there, sounds like a weekend from hell! My distant relative called me this weekend and they said they moved from LA to Scottsdale as it's cheaper, hotter, but still not far from LA and they loved the area, I know sounds so bizzare, but i guess not that many people and power outages less to happen. But knitting with wool must be out of the question now.

I would say "come to Kansas!", but it gets friggin' hot here too and there's humidity to boot....

KZ

I want your cat! I can save him from the heat! (;

Pleasant up Seattle-way...and I can vouch for extreme wool-wearing weather in Montana & Idaho.

Boston is nice in pictures, but its bitter Nor'easters are the exact opposite of your current weather woes.

I say, "Fuhget Baaahston!" Come to Seattle--with its mild climate, beautiful buildings, charming history, primo espressos, fruiti de mare, and bizarre downtown driving conventions, and hello? waterfront!! it's like Italy, but for 1/2 the price.

Oh, and it's the hometizzle of none other than my favorite Italiano: Mario Batali! :P

(P.S. I've been told I should work for the Washington State Tourist Bureau)

Terrible :(

I'm glad you & your pets survived the AC catastrophe :)

Yes, ditto to what Jade said!

Francesca, come to England, the Rowan country, and you'll get nothing but fresh air and rain for free, for ever.

And we always keep an extra bike in the shed you know... :).

best wishes, Silvia

Poor you :-( It sounds terrible.
Yes for Boston (I have an aunt in Salem, Ma, if I ever come over to the States, I will most likely be in that area), big YES for Europe. But go for northern Italy-north Europe. Skip the ultimate south, or you will have the same weather as now (but you know that, who am I to tell this to an Italian...)

Oh dear, I believe weather in Boston is both quite hot and bitterly cold! A great city for learning and culture, but for climate, no.

What about coming up to Northern CA? As Mark Twain wrote: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." This might be your town!

You have my deepest sympathy. MY AC went out the last time I went away to a conference. I came back to kitties that couldn't walk up and down the stairs because it was so hot in the house. They took a couple of steps and then just had to set down again. My heart just broke watching the kitty girls until we got the AC fixed.

Oh no! What a nasty time! I am glad to hear you are breathing again. The weather in Virginia does not seem much better than LA, Let's all move to Europe!

Boston is fantastic. I went to graduate school there and worked there for a year afterwards. I would have loved to have stayed, but at the time I couldn't afford it so I came back to Japan. Yes, it gets hot and humid there for a few weeks in the summer, and a lot of places don't have AC, but except for that brief heat wave, it's tolerable. Well, as long as you like the cold.

Boston's (well, Cambridge's) bookstores are some of the best in the US. Some good yarn stores too...and a Japanese mini-mall complete with izakaya and Japanese bookstore!
