Happy Gloves

Remember Sock and Glove? The author, Miyako Kanamori, has now published a new book — Happy Gloves — all about making cute animals and objects out of old gloves, and the nice folks at Penguin sent me a copy to review.

Happy Gloves: Charming Softy Friends Made from Colorful Gloves
by Miyako Kanamori
Publisher: Penguin Group
63 pages
ISBN-10: 1557885397
ISBN-13: 978-1557885395
in English

All the gloves used in the book are solid color, which works well in showing shapes and details such as fabric appliques and embroidery. And once you master the techniques, you can branch out and use all sorts of gloves. I can already picture old Fair Isle or other colorful gloves used in creative ways.

Bunnies…

All the projects

  • Banana and Flower
  • Car
  • Cat
  • Chipmunk
  • Donkey
  • Doughnut, Muffin, and Bread
  • Duck
  • Elephant
  • Frog
  • Girl
  • Lion
  • Penguin
  • Polar Bear
  • Rabbits, Mother and Baby
  • Teapot and Cup
  • Tiger

Of course I love the baking page…

and the charming illustrations.

The back of the book has a section on "Helpful Things to Know Before Starting" followed by instructions on how to make the individual projects.

Too bad I don't have any sacrificial gloves lying around the house.

Aw, those are adorable! But I have never in my life had a leftover glove :(

The squirrel!!!

Thank you for this great review! I have the Sock and Glove book (They actually had it in my local book store here in Finland) and now I definitely need to get the new one:D

Lucky stiff! Nice book that Penguin sent you to review.

Hilarious!

Awesome, I saw this today at B&N while browsing and It's great to know people think highly of this author. I so want to run back and get that book now, I have a glove set that screams 'squirrel' to me that I simply MUST sacrifice to the cause.

I also am working on my 'green' christmas decorations... and what better than to add some squirrels to your tree? Why not? I've already got some owls.clickie to see owl tutorial

First I just wanted to comment on how beautiful your blog is; It has a true Scandinavian look! I'm a Dane living in the US and I share your facination with Japanese design as I think do many other Danes. The writing in your two embroidery books is definetely Danish, must have been published for both the Japanese and Danish market. I think the connection simply is that both nations cherish the elegant and pure look with great attention to detail. Less is definetely more in our mind.
