Admin + WIP

Since I started this blog, for the most part, I've been addressing comments and questions individually, but now I am wondering if it wouldn't be better to do that on the blog so that each question was answered in the same spot and available to more than just the original commenter. I just can't make up my mind. Emailing you privately has a personal touch and is also what has started a few friendships that I value. Would those friendships have developed if I always replied publicy? On the other hand, most of my visitors — in line with the overall web participation-to-readership ratio — are lurkers who see other readers' comments, but don't get to see my replies and they might be interested. Often I get the same question from several people, which is what prompted me to write that entry on where to buy Japanese books.

Whether you have a blog or not, I'd like to hear your opinion on how you like to see this issue handled. Maybe you have ideas I haven't thought of.

And now to more crafty things…

The past few nights I've been slowly working on my first quilt. For now I am still quilting and haven't started any embroidery. I have ideas, but am unsure of how to proceed.

I also finished the first of my funny gloves. Here you can see it closed…

and with the top folded back.

I worked a little too tight and I want to see if I can figure out a better way to close off the tube than what I've done here. I want it to be as closed as possible when it covers the fingers, but loose engough for when I want to fold it back. It does look a bit wierd, doesn't it? The thing is, if I want it to fold back, I have to leave the top open and if I start adding buttons and such, then I lose the immediacy I like. Ideas anyone?

I like your design. I think I would like to knit a pair of these for myself. It is a nice combination of form and function.

As a new blogger (I've had just less than 10 comments total, so far) I find I rather enjoy direct reply via email. The one thing I wonder about posting your replies is, Would it then take more time from your blogging agenda, spending precious blog time on subjects that might not have much to do with what you really want to blog about? Also, I see replying to comments, as a form of thanking a reader for commenting, public relations, if you will. As a long-time blog lurker, I have found some occasions when I would've liked to read the blogger's replies; I often wonder how much info. on other websites or products I've missed-out on. Although in truth, I have to admit that even as a lurker, I only see other's comments if I am thinking about commenting, or if the blog is formatted with comments already visible, otherwise I just don't have time to read comments on all the blogs I visit. Maybe you have to gauge it according to some comments you want to email on, and which ones you'd to blog on.

On the mitten: I kind of like the idea of placing two buttonholes, one on the palm-side of the finger cuff and one on the top-side of the finger cuff, with a fancy button on the top-side of the mitten so you could fold back the cuff and placing both buttonholes on the button. Sure, it looks different, but it's very creative.

I've struggled with this, too.

I answer all questions with an email. The questions of general interest, I also answer in a blog post. It's pretty easy - mostly copy and paste from the email, although usually I fine tune the answer a little and leave out the personal chat.

I link the blog of the person who asked the question (or just mention their name if they're blogless) and they enjoy seeing that they've contributed to my blog babble.

There's been quite a bit of discussion on several blogs about this recently and I asked a similar question on my blog. To a certain extent it must depend on the number of comments you are getting. I seem to have settled on a combination of commenting reciprocally on blogs, privately emailing, and expanding on comments in my next post (not so much the latter as yet, though). I personally do feel disappointed when I comment substantively (i.e. not just "that's lovely") on a blog and there's no response at all.

hm, all i can think of is velcro on the top of the glove. on the bottom, it'd get in the way of glove use, don't you think? and buttons, though much prettier, are, for me at least, a little tough to do with only one hand.

oh, really crazy idea here, but what about a button *and* yarn - with the yarn hanging off the end of the glove and a button on top of the glove, and then you wind the yarn around the button to hold the glove shut.. ? did that make any sense?? .. ;)

Hi! My two cents on the reply to comments... I think it depends :)
I think if it's a question that should be responded publicly then you should also post it. But otherwise, an email response is probably better. After all, not everyone check an entry on line that they've read and everyone does check their email.

When asked a question I like to answer the person directly, via email, AND if it's of a general nature, I copy part of the email to my blog (usually as a commment) as well. General "that's pretty" type of comments I usually just say thanks in my comment section. Unfortunately the majority of my comments come through without an email address that I can respond to, so I can't reply privately even when I would like to.

i have struggled too with how to respond to people who comment. i think i mostly do it via email, and have made some wonderful friends and contacts that way - you... that i wouldn't have if i only responded via the blog comment area. but, i don't usually post things that people ask how to do, so my replies are more conversational than instructive. i know that couldn't have helped your decision at all....haha.

I like your idea of answering questions on the blog so others can see the answers, too.
Really enjoy reading your blog and I am a subscriber, although not much of a commenter.

I prefer email, and usually use a posting on the blog to address multiple questions on the same topic, or a question I think others will find interesting/useful. But it's your blog--do what you have time to do! :)

I haven't reached the number of comments per post that would preclude individual replies, so I tend to acknowledge everyone who drops by and says hello. On occasion where it has been warranted I've done a brief supplementary post to publicise some link or piece of information someone has kindly given me, so everyone gets the benefit of others' wisdom, but I really enjoy direct contact with the lovely people who visit my site so I'll go on replying to as many of them as I can for as long as I can!

My blog is on blogspot and there is no way I can see the commentor's email address. For that very reason I have started "signing" my comments with my email address, should the blogger be moved to email me directly. I wish the folks who comment on my blog would leave their email addresses, then I could answer them via email instead of trying to find *their* blog and comment there. Whew!

about your mittens - the usual way to do those is to make a flap that folds over the finger and then folds back out of the way. I made up my own pattern for them. I wonder if you couldn't find a pattern if you were to google for one?
